The author asks when Lai Ya Wen started playing volleyball. Lai  says she got the bug to play at age 11 on TV for the first time. She was captivated by the phenomenal 21-year-old spiker whom the commentator kept praising. "I wanted to try and be like her." she grains. (Who was it?) Lai smiles broadly and gazes over at the tall, statuesque woman who is busy directing a blocking drill - Lang Ping.
